Ancient Faith Radio

I have found of late an unexpected pleasure in the podcasts of Ancient Faith Radio, an online media division of Conciliar Press, which operates under the auspices of the Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese of North America.

Republic of T: Taking Conservatives At Their Word Regarding Deathwishes against Liberals

Terrance Heath of the Republic of T does a nice job of outlining the hate language used by some specific conservative media personalities and how such comments may have contributed to a recent church killing. As blogged recently here, a man in Tennessee killed two and wounded six more during a children's service at a liberal, pro-gay Unitarian church near Knoxville.

Some highlights:

Vester: You say you’d rather not talk to liberals at all?

(Ann) Coulter: I think a baseball bat is the most effective way these days.

John McCain is the Bigotry of Low Expectations

In a piece otherwise effusively praising the intellectual curiosity of Big Media's Big Boyfriend John McCain, we get treated to this reluctant admission by the Post's designated McCain-escort-for-hire Robert Kaiser:

McCain is a restless seeker of stimulation and information. Books are one source -- "He's a voracious reader, a constant inquirer," said Salter. McCain jokes about his lousy academic record (he finished fifth from the bottom of his class at Annapolis) but is clearly proud of what he has learned from reading and travel. And he uses Senate hearings as seminars.

Welcome, Government Web-Surfing Goldbrickers!

Bthesite.com (Baltimore Sun), July 9, 2008:

Do you conduct personal business on the Internet while you're at work?

WBAL TV 11 News I-Team reporter David Collins said elected officials and government employees are, and they're doing it on your dime.

Most people think "Harry Potter," "Spiderman" and "Star Wars" are things children are into, but it appears that some government employees like them, too. Collins reported that many have been busy editing those and other topics on Wikipedia, an unofficial people's encyclopedia where anyone can contribute -- but they probably didn't realize their edits can be traced.

Pizza.com Owner Earns $2.6 MM for $20 Investment & Fees

Gizmodo/BBC, April 5, 2008:

A 43-year-old man from Maryland has sold the domain name pizza.com for almost 10,000 times the price he paid for it. Chris Clark registered the name pizza.com in 1994 for just $20, and continued to pay the annual registration fee until January of this year, when he heard the domain name vodka.com had gone for a massive $3 million, and decided he wanted a slice of the pie.

I won't attempt to calculate the effective ROI on this one, but at any interest rate if you are spending less than $500 total and getting back over 2 million dollars, you are doing well.

The Beast: Dumb as Dixie

Allan Uthman of The Beast: America's Best Fiend, "Dumb as Dixie", February 2008:

But why is it really that presidential campaigns pull out their dirtiest, most detestable tricks in South Carolina? Why, after all, do they reserve their metaphorical brawn only for this one primary?
