Okay, that last one may actually be true.

In other matters, I think that Brian Griffiths has a pretty good point about the shocking lack of institutional competence over at the MTA. I favor transit-oriented development as a development model and ideally MTA might be the right people to plan and execute TOD per a current Maryland Senate proposal, in the same way that airports have developed their commercial capacities from mere sky mall magazines to bona fide shopping. Good examples of transit oriented development include the redevelopment of DC's Union Station and the radius neighborhoods along Arlington, VA's Orange Line corridor. But the same MTA whose vehicles, platforms and stations have become depressing pits of squalor, inefficiency and violence needs to take care of job one before indulging any mission creep.
