Lèse majesté from the Field Negro on the Anniversary of the Death of the King [sic]
Click HERE to Bring Up Full Post

Maximum respect be upon the Field Negro for his failure to bow down to the "King." I don't get the adulation of Tupac Shakur or of Elvis Presley; both died "awkwardly" and in ways that allow their worshippers fans to maintain that they did not die but do live. Maybe I am too much of a damn Yankee.

At least Tupac could write real lyrics.

Give me Sinatra before Presley any day.

Billie Holiday's "Ain't Nobody's Business"

Audra McDonald brings an operatic timbre to this song, but nobody sang "Ain't It The Truth" like Lena Horne. Its humanist lyrics caused Lena Horne's performance to be cut from Cabin in the Sky, though the fact that she sang it while in the bathtub in 1943 probably contributed more.

In my view, we need more "Ain't Nobody's Business" and "Ain't It The Truth" from public servants, both in the literal meanings of the titles and in their performers' examples of dignity and grace.

Amy Winehouse: Tears Dry On Their Own

To me, what's amazing about this singer is that when she talks, her Middlesex English accent is very strong., but she sings like 1930's or 40's Harlem. Sort of like Cyndi Lauper from the 1980's in that one might not conceive of her speaking voice and accent as thick Brooklynese from her music.

People Who Follow Boomer Music Tell Me Something Happened Forty Years Ago Today

The Crab does not give a damn about tie-dyed Boomer musical idols. People spent too much time groovin' back then when important work needed to be done.

But as an anthopological, archeological, perhaps paleontological record, I note the following:

A Response to Hillary Clinton's Web Call for Campaign Songs

The music most likely to get my vote, going back to just before her husband got elected President, is far superior to any of the choices offered by the lamenesses running the musical selection of Team Hillary:

But my gut feelings, not my policy analysis but my instincts, are a little closer to this:

As usual, Attila of Pillage Idiot has the smartest take of them all on such things. I am also glad that he caught Ace of Spades' latest dissertation on Ace's aversion to women's bodies. Somebody's gotta tell Ace that he can be straight, he can be gay, he can be bi or he can be celibate out of religious conviction, but "Ace-exual" is no way for a grown-ass man to go through life.

This is the song that led rapper Darren McDaniels (DMC of old school rap's Run-DMC), upon hearing it at a low point in his career, to turn away from suicide and reassess his life. He and McLachlan later collaborated on several projects.

In my opinion, the world needs a little more Sarah McLachlan.
